Actually you couldn't buy in 2008. You'd have to wait another year until the software is released, then you'd have no other option but to mine with your CPU by ticking the Enable mining checkbox in the Bitcoin software.

That's fair yeah. I'd forgotten mtgox wasn't until a bit later. But I sure would be mining it using a normal laptop CPU not a crazy massive mining rig.
