El Salvador's Congress has reportedly passed a migration law granting expedited citizenship to foreigners making "donations" in Bitcoin to government social and economic development programs. The law was approved on December 21 with the support of Nayib Bukele's New Ideas party, according to a Reuters report. It is expected to take effect in the coming days.
Bukele temporarily resigned from the presidency to focus on his reelection campaign, scheduled for February 4, 2024. Bukele led the Bitcoin revolution in El Salvador, making the cryptocurrency legal tender in September 2021.
The Salvadoran government has not made an official announcement about the new law, but the National Bitcoin Office (ONBTC) reposted several posts on X (formerly Twitter) sharing the news. The ONBTC is a special administrative unit that manages all Bitcoin and cryptocurrency-related projects developed throughout the country.
The bill has been labeled as a "vital interest" by Bukele, according to Reuters. Many Bitcoin-related projects in the country are currently led by Bitcoiners from foreign countries.
"Altruistic foreigners interested in supporting the economic, social, and cultural development of El Salvador... by donating bitcoin," the bill states. Reuters reported that the law does not specify a minimum value for donations.
The approval of this law comes about two weeks after El Salvador launched the "Bitcoin Freedom Visa" for foreigners willing to invest $1 million in BTC or Tether in the Central American country.
This is a developing story, and more information will be added as it becomes available.
