Probably was asked before but I can't find it. And it's probably been long enough anyway so it makes sense to ask again.

Any recommendations for a good intro to nixOS? I've got a buddy who's been preaching that gospel but I've not yet explored.

this is the video that made me jump into NixOS for every machine I have... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Le0IbPRzOE

It can be challenging, but never forget that Nix is a language, a package manager and an OS. You can start with the package manager on the OS you already have (note: I went straight to the OS on a spare computer and a month later moved my config to all my other machines, portability and reproducibility is where Nix shines)

Once you have been inside the Nix rabbit hole, you can't to back 😉

Mainly Linux (and I prefer Gentoo), although due to laziness I still haven't reinstalled my new Thinkpad T470s travel laptop, it's still running Win 10 Pro and I use Ubuntu with WSL for development there.

Pleasantly surprised so many Linix users :)

Android. My smartphone is the only thing I have at the moment

reply

That also counts as Linux imo

But I'll let it slip. MacOS is also kind of Linux :)

reply

Android has Linux only for kernel.

MacOS isn't Linux at all, Darwin (kernel of macOS) is fork of BSD, completely independent UNIX.

Oh, interesting, didn't know that. Thanks for calling me out, lol

I just guessed that it's some branch of UNIX.

reply

macOS kernel is fork of 4.4BSD, which later become FreeBSD. It comes from NextSTEP era, when Steve Jobs wasn't with Apple.

Xactly. I wanted to point on the type of hardware

I wonder what people use in the Other option.

Maybe BSD?, can't think of any other big OS

reply

I have a MacBook so I mostly use that but I use Ubuntu on my old laptops and my desktop. Also I have a full node running on Ubuntu on one of my old laptops

Windows. As a 3D and motion graphics artist, I just can't work without my apps and instruments which require Windows
