Agreed. Drive across the western U.S. states if you want to see wide open spaces. Same with giant swaths of Asia, Africa, Australia. Western Europe, I agree, is getting a bit crowded.
Ah yes. I was thinking about the space in the cities that we already have. Some cities have no other choice but to expand vertically. In places where there is space, we still don't see those apartment buildings.
But there are always exceptions. Like Whittier in Alaska, in the mountains... yet, the entire town is in one centralized building.

Whittier is one of the most spectacularly corrupt and dysfunctional towns you could ever find.

I just watched a little YouTube documentary on Whittier. I think now they have two apartment buildings, but the one you showed has most of the residents and all the stores. Alaska is a crazy place.
