Swiss ethnologist Brigitta Hauser-Schäublin opposes the rush to restitute museums' Benin bronzes, a view that sets her apart from authoritative voices in Europe. She believes the debate on returning the bronzes is a strategic diversionary tactic and that the process is proceeding on the basis of a naive perpetrator-victim format. Hauser-Schäublin also argues that Nigeria has failed to preserve and care for its own museums' collections of the Benin bronzes, and therefore should not be given any more. She suggests a "shared heritage" approach to the bronzes, rather than individual or state ownership.
