The Reverend Gary Davis is best known as a brilliant blues guitarist, but he also was a legendary guitar teacher. From his Queens NY row house he would give guitar lessons to aspiring young musicians, many of whom used their knowledge to create the rock music of the 1970s. Among those students were Bob Weir, Rory Block, Ernie Hawkins, David Bromberg, Dave Von Ronk, Larry Campbell, and Woody Mann. The song I've chosen today is Death Don't Have No Mercy, a truly frightening blues that has become a standard. The video animation is pretty creative.
