It "boosts" your post higher into the frontpage ranking for a limited time - allowing more users to see it who might not otherwise upvote it. The more boost, the longer and higher your post will be on the frontpage.
What is the calculation? Is it in seconds?
And what is the front page? Is that recent or top?

The frontpage is https://stacker.news.
The basic algorithm divides the boost by a power of the time since a story was submitted - this is added to its normal ranking (based on upvotes) and ranked relative to other stories on the frontpage. It's explained in the faq.
There is no direct parity between seconds and sats.
