There is interesting discussion of all the fuckery w/ British metal money in Neal Stephenson's "Quiksilver".

Highly recommend. Throughout the book (historical fiction novel) he discusses "hard money", clipping, alchemy, funding wars, royal intervention in money, invention and crashes of paper certificates / deposit slips, etc.
