When Stacker News for iOS and Android?

IIRC @k00b talks about difficulty of app development in this podcast - #29496
Not clear it’s a priority at the moment vs other developmental features in the pipeline. Maybe if some wealthy stacker wants to sponsor a outsized bounty…

We'll get there eventually. Path forward for a mobile app will probably be opening up the API -> creating a significant bounty for some mobile savvy dev to create it should they want to.

Short term measure, as suggest by @nout, is to turn SN into a progressive web app and significantly overhaul the UI for mobile.

And there's a somewhat easy way to wrap progressive web app into Android App and put it on Play Store... so that would cover that :)
Just to reference here - I did a lo-fi mock for how could the mobile app look here: #19801 (with focus on mobile usability - i.e. making things reachable by thumb, etc)

Do plan to charge to access the API?, Would be interesting to charge a fee so you could get some sats and push for more features.

It kind of depends on the type of access. I think programatic posting/commenting might either be disallowed or be quite expensive.
Otherwise, I'd like to keep read access quite cheap and easy.

I'd prefer stacker focus on the site and allow other mobile apps to pull in the feed, like fountain app, breez or tweetoshi, lets build a superapp. I have enough apps on my phone as is

Upvote this. I am using just mobile browser.
SN App looks quite like Reddit App which I do not use in principle.

I use an IOS shortcut on my homescreen to mimick an app, works great tbh

SN webpage on mobile is perfectly fine. I do not see a strong need to have a mobile specific app, low priority in my opinion

Exactly, we should not always seek for "an app for that" instead we should rely more on the native browser and provide a responsive, mobile friendly UI.
Every app on your phone is an attack vector

I agree. I can't see any benefit in an app for users. The website works perfectly well. I prefer browser based sites as I feel more in control of privacy compared with apps.

Why does it need to be an app?

I would prefer to focus on features rather than mobile app. Web version works like a charm b

One major bug in the user experience of SN mobile is when you hit back to go to the front page, you lose track of the location of your scroll (all the presses of "more" gets forgotten)
It incentives me to stay within the first 20 posts and not dig deeper into the old posts
