In bitcoinhackers.org you have to search directly for the channel name, e.g. @btc_media@bitcointv.com and hit enter when it shows up and then you can follow.

you can also click the subscribe button on a video and enter your mastadon/etc activity pub address

Got it! For some reason I read that as logging into bitcointv.com using my bitcionhackers.org account.
