So, I've properly orangepilled both my parents, but they haven't gotten any corn yet on account of being quite nervous about the process of self-costody and (thankfully) being unwilling to trust custodial solutions.

So, for Christmas, I need a way to get them started with cold storage to help them start saving in Bitcoin. I'm looking for something relatively cheap and simple so that they don't have to dive into the madness trickiness of hardware wallets right of the bat.

There's two options I'm looking at right now.

Option 1: TapsignerOption 1: Tapsigner

ProsPros

  • Simple and Intuitive
  • Physical, so they'll be used the the security model
  • Cheap as far as hardware wallets go

ConsCons

  • Not BIP39, so there's no seed phrase backup
  • If lost, your coins are all but screwed
  • Not much support for desktop wallets

Option 2: Seed PlateOption 2: Seed Plate

ProsPros

  • Easy to do multiple backups
  • Super cheap
  • As cold as you can get without multi-sig

ConsCons

  • No individual signing, must make the entire wallet hot to use
  • Less physicality, so they'd be less use to the security model

I've had a great experience with things like the Coldcard, but that's pretty spendy and advanced for their first venture into cold storage. I want to brief them on the options for when they get storing really large stacks, but for now I just want to get them started with Bitcoin.

about the tapsigner:

If lost, your coins are all but screwed

As long as you have an encrypted backup of your key and the decryption password that is written on the card, you are OK.
