I use the term crypto all the time for cryptography (and get scoffs all the time). It reminds me of when the term "master" became offensive in computer science so people switched to "main".

At the end of the day it's just people being tribal and weird.

I also think that way. The term Crypto gives the impression that it is secure and the truth is that we always need to add security to our assets.
