I’ve been tempted to build something similar. But not exactly sports betting.
More so for friend bets or challenges. Removing the oracle problem. Could probably use the zaplocker code, if working with someone more technical.
Already got an idea of UX. Felt like too much of a project to tackle alone.

I think this will go beyond sports betting and allow people to wager on custom events, but ekzyis can correct me if that's wrong. I know he's also interested in political prediction markets.

Yeah, sports betting is just one use case for "using money to determine information quality" (as mentioned in SN's job description).
Still need to look into how sport bets usually work. Maybe a prediction market is too general, and sports betting is more a prediction market with limited functionality. So I intend to build a solid foundation on which other stuff can be built on top.
Are you allowed to sell your bet to someone else? Or do you have to commit to a bet and then sit it out until the end?
reply
458 sats \ 0 replies \ @Undisciplined 19 Nov 2023
I don't think you need to restrict yourself to how sports betting usually works, but generally you are stuck with the bet you made. Having the option to sell it just makes it better, as far as I can tell.

I've got an idea. Let me first state the problem.
Let us say we want to order some physical product from somewhere near or far, and that product needs a delivery address. I would like to be able to obscure the physical address for delivery, w/o using a PO box.
How could physical addresses be rendered in LN adresses?
This also brings to mind mapping the physical world onto Bitcoin or Lightning thru use of Geo addresses encoded onto Ordinals or something of the sort.
reply
35 sats \ 0 replies \ @VzxPLnHqr 20 Nov 2023
Yes. There is no need for every e-commerce merchant to know your physical address. There have been a couple explorations, but a lot of work still needs to be done to make it practical. See this SN thread
If done right, it feels like we should be able to take the Amazon Prime model and flip it inside out.

Maybe some sort of middleman approach.
Like the product is sent to address X and then forwarded onto address Y.
The problem with this approach is that the middleman needs to know everything.

3 words is a really cool site. I'll definitely play around with that.
I have an idea on how it could be done. In order to get from point A to point B a route is determined, and the forwarding stations along the way are determined in the shipping contract. Each point along the way only sees the next destination for the pkg. So the final destination is only known by the final carrier.

Like a lot of Bitcoin businesses, it might not scale. It could simply be consultancy and support: education, infrastructure setup and servicing for small merchants.
The fact this isn't appealing to VCs is actually a good thing.
It means tons of new work opportunities all over the world for independent lightning specialists.

I wrote so many guides about these aspects... I am getting tired writing guides.
I wonder why people do not pay attention to these things.
Just an example: the adult industry.
Be their "uncle Jim" LN bank.
I will give you some hints:
- LNBits with the extensions: bitcoin switch, streamer copilot, LNURL/LN address, nostr market, split payment (you get a cut directly)
- lightning.video is also an option (they have a dedicated NSFW section)
- zap.stream too
Build the node/solution for them and be their "LN bank" and get a cut.
The adult industry is a huge business opportunity to use it with BTC.

I think lightning can be used in events to create a circular economy between fans and performers. Imagine the entrance fee includes a fan interaction debit card loaded with sats and different tiers for certain privileges. From a merchant point of view, this would be good because it would encourage users to spend their balance in the circular economy. From a consumer point of view, it would allow them to exchange value for value in however they see fit.

Lightning-enabled IOT. Hardware that is flexible, modular and that works out the box.
Either DIY kits or preloaded with software. Lightbulbs, switches, relays, cameras, speakers, power monitors, batteries, scales, routers… all customisable that could make a lightning payment when used, turned on or state changes.
Use cases:
- landlords wanting to charge for energy usage rather than end of month/quarter
- pay for your Wifi (friends, family neighbours)
- weight challenges - if get fat & weigh more than 100kg charge yourself a penalty fee
- teaching kids about hardware via Lightning
- automated inventories - ordering local produce when fridge running low
- recycling plastics, glass & cardboard powered by LN that weighs and pays
- trainers with a pedometer that unlock your own sats
In general would love to see more of this fun stuff, to pick-up and run with (pun intended). Building on what MakerBits is doing. It’s the type of stuff that inspires the next generation.

When i go to events and see a in-house raffle going on, cant help but dream of the lightning application.
Imagine you are running say a local minor league baseball team. You want to do a raffle during your game where you send employees out into the stadium to hawk raffle tickets then later in the game youll announce the winner. Instead of cash, you could have people send sats to the raffle, at whatever denomination, and could even display in real time the amount in the pool, likelihood per sat to win, payout amt, etc. You dont even need employees to hawk it, just have the qr code for sending. Could couple with nostr nicely too to easily ID who is sending what 🤙

Here's one idea, expert advice platform in exchange for streaming sats. A platform where you can chat or book calls with experts for their opinion/consultations on specific topics (think lawyers, engineers, doctors, etc.) in exchange for sats. (fixed or variable amount of sats per unit of time).
There should be as well a reputation / vouching mechanism with some sats redistributed for those who vouched for / referred the expert.
And here's another idea coming from my hate of voice messages. Imagine if you can paywall voice messages on messaging apps with sats whereby the sender would incentivize the receiver to hear an audio message by streaming sats to them OR the receiver can set a sats rate per seconds for audio messages received.
That way, people would be incentivized to send succinct and essential voice messages and no time would be wasted hearing 5 mins of audio that can be summarized in 3 bullet points.
Telegarm has an option for premium users whereby you can opt out of receiving audio messages. It would be nice to take that one step further and paywall it.

These places are so ripe for using bitcoin over lightning.
Everyone's got the "Square" payment hardware which, somehow knows your email address for sending receipts.
A single QR code connected to a wallet or other app that can integrate with transmitting receipts back, perhaps with a time limit on the KYC info, would be a good substitute.

Some kind of commitment contract, to help motivate you do to things and avoid procrastination. Like Stickk (https://www.stickk.com/) but using zaps.
Here's the definition of Commitment Contract as per Stickk:
A Commitment Contract is a binding agreement you sign with yourself to ensure that you follow through with your intentions—and it does this by utilizing the psychological power of loss aversion and accountability to drive behavior change.
So if you had a goal of, say, writing a blog post weekly, you could put that in the contract, along with some sats as a bond. You find a partner to hold you accountable. The partners job is to review the photo or link (or whatever evidence you provide) to make sure you did what you planned.
For instance, if you've been procrastinating on cleaning out the garage, you could post the before picture as a part of the contract, and then the after picture, with a clean garage. Your partner would agree - your garage is now clean - and the sats would get returned.
You'd make a profit by organizing this, connecting people, setting up the agreement - setters with the agreement - validators. And you'd take a percentage. Or maybe have a subscription model, where you charge people X amount a month and let them make these contracts.
People are looking for this type of thing. Check out flow.club. People want accountability.

This was fun to think about! Okay, I’m surprised that companies have not utilised the Lightning Network to conduct guerrilla marketing yet. They could announce to the public to be on the hunt for a specific number of QR codes scattered all over the city on public transport, shopping malls, amenities and so on. So, as you scan a QR code, you will be rewarded with some sats and required to read/watch an advertisement by the sponsoring company. Participants who manage to scan all the QR codes will be treated to even more sats as a bonus. I guarantee that the use of the Lightning Network will spike because it appeals to people’s competitive nature.
As an educator, I wish some companies engage students as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility efforts. Students who submit something they learn to a cloud platform will be rewarded with 21 sats as a small token of appreciation for their learning. I guarantee that youths’ motivation levels towards studying will increase since their submission will be viewed by others. Also, they get to earn just by studying. Who can complain about my logic?

I'll offer a little critique. While I've come to be suspicious of any big corporation, their responsibility is to provide a good or service, and the employment that comes with it. This notion of "corporate social responsibility" sounds like this merger between fascism and Marxism. Aka BlackRock.
On the other hand, the notion of a carrot for demonstrating learning seems valid. I would like think that some puzzle would have to be solved to resolve the QR code or something like that, in order that plagiarism is avoided.

A raspberry Pi + a tiny WiFi router could be plugged in absolutely everywhere by entrepreneurs who have a few sats to spend on this cheap box. Imagine putting one in a starbucks.
Anyone with a phone, tablet, or laptop that wants some cheap, anonymous internets can simply log into it with LNAuth and pay for internet at a sats per minute rate. Today's WiFi spec (802.11ax) is highly efficient and operates on all 3 wifi channels. Great range & bandwidth.
