From 1948, until 2013, Voice of America was forbidden to broadcast directly to American citizens to protect the American public from propaganda actions by their own government.
The only reason for the ban being dropped in 2013 was that the Internet had allowed U.S. citizens to hear it for years anyway...
As someone not from America this is hilarious to me.
The idea that a government-funded international radio and television broadcasting service with the stated mission "to serve as a reliable source of news and information" wasn't spreading propaganda seems about as insane as thinking it's not still happening.
