Is there a way to migrate from an LND node to a C-Lightning node without absolute chaos on channel closes?
I have been giving it a thought but it would absolutely not be worth it if the I get channel closes from this.

No. There's no way to do that. You must close the channels and open new ones in CLN.

sad, is this because the way the nodes store state is so different? or does it have to do with the actual open channel transaction?

It's because are totally different LN implementations, using different type of language and databases.
We are far from having a full interoperability between LN implementations. They are still fighting each others trying to have a larger cake cut in the nodes market.
I hope someday they will stop this silly fight and do something good together.
