That's usually what Android users say. But actually you can buy 5+ year old factory refurbished iPhone's for less than 200 EUR and they work without much problems. Don't think any 5+ year old Android is usable with recent OS.

Why do you need recent OS? Lets be honest you will only be using it to message/calls and some browsing.

Also 2FA, Internetbanking, Bitcoin wallets, Damus (Nostr).

You dont need the latest version of OS for any of that

Not true, recently got nofication from Swedbank that their iOS banking app will no longer support iOS 15, which is the latest I can upgrade my iPhone 7 to. From my old Android days I remember apps dropping support for older Android OS versions even sooner.

Been thinking about this from the angle of de-googled phones. Teens aren't usually very forward thinking though so it doesn't really concern me.

They care more about cringe braindead tiktok videos than privacy and security.

Exactly... they're kids...
They use iPhones because of the marketing and their social group.

I dunno, I think this is a US specific thing. Here in New Zealand an iPhone costs a massive premium to the equivalent spec Android and there's a lot more variety when it comes to Android. Most young people I see are using an Android. One reason could also be because we don't ban Chinese competitors from selling their phones here (Huawei).
