Bitcoin can't be seized. That's the whole point.

This. Seems that Jimmy is a bit confused.

No, he's likely just talking about custodial. That's probably all the state knows to exist in the first place. ;)

...If you hodl your own. If the laws go really wrong I fully expect for them to seize everyone's coins at coinbase and other KYC'd exchanges before the public can pull them out.
Not like we didn't warn them.
reply
If you don't "hodl your own" you never had bitcoin to begin with so it still can't be seized because it was never yours to begin with.
reply
I think they mean actively trying to. They might not be able to actually seize it, but a $5 wrench attack still hurts like the devil and prison is no fun. So if the government starts coming after your coins and you have to flee the country, where are you headed?
reply
That's a good question.
I guess it would depend. If the US banned bitcoin (some states & people would not comply of course), the west would likely follow. Then other countries might also go along in order to trade with the west etc.
IDK I'd like to have some options in SE Asia & South America. If we see it coming, try to get out in time.

Matter of when, not if. Start planning and scouting now, if this concerns you.

they started seizing BTC
never expected from you this one... Come and get my BTC if you can...
reply
Well, surely that one... It'd be funny to see them try!

Switzerland is the easiest choice, based on location and policies, but there really are no good choices.
Anywhere you can find a chunk of land and raise enough animals/vegetables to live on will be ok, but if governments start to require exchanges to fork over funds from certain wallets, then it will be done in a synchronized fashion, just like lockdowns were. Either the people will roll over and take it, or the government will collapse.

Few random thoughts. The US at least has an army of lawyers that would defend you if the government tried to seize stuff, but that doesn't mean you would win. The legal environment in El Salvador is probably the safest for a Bitcoiner.
What is the appeal of Switzerland? Can anyone tell me why they're the best choice?
reply
I thought the "army of lawyers" in the US would be a defense against the insanity of the covid lockdowns/forced injections. Unfortunately, that was not the case. I don't think it will be the case in regards to bitcoin confiscation either.

They: give me your bitcoin Me: nah

Wanted to pick USA, but if the EU starts seizing BTC, the US is not far behind - or most likely already started seizing BTC and the EU is just following.
btw, EU != Europe. Switzerland is not a part of the EU but it's in Europe
Not sure if you already know, but reading the polls looked weird to me. The options Switzerland and Malta/Somewhere in the EU except Switz. sounded more like simply Switzerland and EU.
