It's a snowy Saturday in my neck of the woods. When my daughter woke up this morning and I told her that it was snowing she said "that was my wish". I replied "you wished it would snow"? and she said "yes, so I can throw a snowball at you" and laughed hysterically. It is not always easy but being a parent is so much damn fun. There is not much snow on the ground but I will have to take her out before it melts so she can pelt me with snowballs.
The second set of NBA in-season tournament games took place last night. Some pretty good matchups. The next set of games take place on Tuesday. @Undisciplined has already posted the matchups for Tuesday so don't forget to make your picks. #312497
I watched the end of the Leafs/Flames game last night hoping to see the Leafs go down in flames. Sadly it did not occur, the Leafs won in a shootout. I really dislike this 3/3 OT and then shootout format, mostly because this is the only way the Leafs can win. They have played 14 games this year and only won 3 in regulation but won 4 in OT or shootout. Obviously they can't rely on winning by gimmick come playoff time but it still irritates me. I say play a 10 minute OT and bring back the tie. Thoughts?
Sats for all.
Cheers, GR
For the degenerates, I was checking in on the NFL FreeBitcoin odds and it looks like someone dropped a ton of sats onto the Steelers and Chargers. If the Packers or Lions appeal to you this weekend, those lines are heavily skewed for the time being.

what's the site? i still do all my sports betting on draft kings, like a filthy fiat normie. i should probably remedy that

It's one of the more popular faucets and it just started hosting NFL bets. They use an unusual odds mechanism, so let me know if you don't understand it, because I think I've gotten a handle on it.
reply
sweet, appreciate it

I think I have about 74 sats left after all the bets I made this week. I need some wins this week or I am going to have to deposit more sats.
reply
It seems like they would do more business if they had lightning integration, but maybe they like keeping withdrawals costly.
reply
Definitely. I see they reduced their free roll sats to 5 from 6. I do that free roll whenever I log on but I don't think I have ever won more than 6 sats.
reply
I've gotten the second lowest payout a few times, but I also roll it several times a day.
reply
I already bet on lions but now I am regretting adding that bet on the Bitcoin price for Nov when I see these odds for the Packers.
reply
I can put something down on the Packers for you if you want to spot me the sats on here.
reply
It's ok. I actually had 84 sats left not 74 so I put 75 sats on the packers which means I have now managed to ensure a guaranteed loss. Haha. Not totally sure how odds work based on betting early etc but at current odds I would win 570 sats if steelers win and 280 sats if the packers win but I bet a total of 575 sats.
Hopefully I got better odds when I bet steelers early.
reply
I think with how early you put in that Steelers bet, You would actually get 640'ish if they win. The "multiplier" basically goes from doubling your profits to having no impact.
reply
Yes, odds were definitely better when I took the Steelers. I wish it posted current payout potential next to your pending bets. I will track it when I place bets starting next week. It would be good to know if I am actually getting paid out the odds it says when I place the bet. I am channeling my inner degen here, just placing bets having no clue what I am doing.
reply
You won't get the original odds. Those are how the pool would have been divvied up at that moment. This is an old English style betting pool, so the pool just gets divided up amongst the winners after the house takes its cut. The early betters get a bigger share per sat than the late betters.
reply
Absolutely spot on. I hate shoot outs so much I turn off the games lately. I'll watch the new nonsense OT, but it has the feel of a post game skills competition.
reply
The 3 on 3 is pretty exciting but it is too easy for teams to control the puck in 3 on 3. Last night wasn't bad because both teams controlled the puck for awhile and got scoring opportunities but the game where the Leafs beat the Lightning in OT was essentially the Leafs won the OT faceoff and their skilled players just skated around in open space for 2 mins with no opportunity to check them and then they scored. Tampa didn't touch the puck once.
reply
I haven't followed hockey in such a long time that I thought they still had ties. Why'd they get rid of them?
reply
No they currently have 5mins of 3/3 overtime and a shootout to determine a winner. Winner gets 2 points which is the same as a regulation win and the loser gets 1 point for what is deemed an overtime loss. I actually wouldn't mind this system if they went to a 3 point for a regulation win, 2 for OT win and 1 for OT loss but it is ridiculous to me that a win by gimmick is worth the same as a hard fought regulation victory. It would be like the NBA deciding games by 3 point contest.
I get fans pay good money and don't want to see a tie but last night the leafs essentially won because a player screwed up. He lost control of the puck stickhandling which took him off his line the goalie followed and tried to poke check it away but he got back control just before the poke check and essentially had an open net to shoot at. That tied the shootout and pushed it to extra shots which the leafs won in. Sure maybe the goalie shouldn't have gone for the poke check but these one on one matchups and even when they play 3 on 3 have such a high degree of luck (guessing right or having the puck bounce your way) that I don't think the victory should be worth the same points as a 5 on 5 60 minute regulation win.
I also find the last few minutes of regulation games usually suck now because teams are trying to win but they are also trying not to lose. If you get to OT you get a point and pretty much a 50/50 shot at a second point so you are incentivizing teams to play cautiously in the final few minutes when it is tied to try to get to OT and secure a point.

Some nights it's hard to tell the difference.
Who came up with those overtime rules? Why not just have the next goal win, if they wanted to get rid of ties?
To tie into our flag football conversation, imagine if NFL OT were a 7 on 7 flag football match.
I actually think NBA OT would be much more improved as a first to 11 game of 1-on-1.
reply
It's true about the 3 point contest. NBA teams were probably underutilizing the 3 for a long time but it seems like the pendulum has swung a bit far in the other direction.

I actually feel like it's been better this season.
For the life of me, I can't understand why guys in the 80's took so many shots with their foot right on the line. Even as kids, we understood the whole 3>2 thing and tried not to shoot while stepping on the line. It would be like if wide receivers didn't even try to get both feet down inbounds.
reply
Derozan used to drive me nuts when he played with the raptors. He would take at least 3 or 4 shots a game that were 1 foot from the 3 point line. Guys aren't guarding you there for a reason. They will give you that shot all day.

I haven't follow hockey for a while and I still thought the OT was played 4 on 4. Never knew it was changed to 3 on 3. I personally don't mind the shoot outs, as I find them quite fun and exciting to watch. As long as playoff games are not decided by shoot outs, I'm fine with that.
Speaking of playoff OT games, I still remember watching round 1 game 1 of the 2007 playoffs, where Vancouver beat Dallas 5-4 in 4OT. That game was looong. It was not only a marathon for the players, but also a marathon for the fans. I almost fell asleep watching it because it was so late. I think Luongo made over 70 saves or something. Just a crazy game.
reply
I like those games. It almost becomes as much about how long can this game go as it is about who will win. Heartbreaking to lose though.
reply
Yes, and extra sweet for the winning side. I was jumping up and down when Henrik scored that 4OT goal.
