Madden was my favorite, but I think 2001 was the last one I played. I doubt I'm the only Raider fan who that's true for.
I also really enjoyed NBA Live, which was the precursor to 2K. I think 2004 is the most recent one I played. Since the 2004 Pistons are my favorite team of all time, I never felt the need to update it. Also, I liked assembling Lebron's heat in their rookie year and playing career mode.
I liked the NBA and NHL games a lot more back then. The controls were much easier. Now they all have these elaborate shot and movement controls. I don't want to spend 20 hours learning how to play a game. I just want to pick it up and play for half an hour and then put it away for 5 days.

That reminds me that my brother had a Sega NHL game that was awesome. Obviously, most of the fun was getting into fights.

I don't think they have much fighting NHL games anymore. In the older games there used to be 2 or 3 a game but last time I played NHL 2K fighting was really rare and hard to instigate. There is probably a slider that lets you increase the frequency but the default was pretty rare.
