What are peoples’ zap ethos?

I’m stuck on multiples of 21.

I’m afraid I still suffer from a scarcity mentality and keep to my zaps to 10 sats. Though on some days I feel richer, so I zap the post/comment twice. Maybe it’s time to change my default to 21 haha

It’s time! Have some sats.

Seconded! Sats for both of you

Here's what I do:

Principle 1: zap the things you want to see in the world -- people who are helpful, nice, funny, cool, and who have interesting perspectives. People who respond thoughtfully when you ask something. Pretend that you'll get more of whatever behavior you zap. Pretend you're voting for the culture that will emerge here.

Principle 2: Get a feel for what the norms of the place are, and combine that with absolute value. I want people to feel it when I think they're great; but I also don't want to blow out the speakers. The amounts to accomplish this have been creeping upward, though.

Principle 3: Stay in the black. This is kind of dumb, but I wanted to see if I could do stuff that people would value after my initial buy-in. Now that I've got a large-ish stack, by the current zapping standards, I have done stuff like donate 100k sats, and give 10k when someone worth encouraging needs it. I'm pretty far in the black at this point, but I'm adjusting slowly bc I don't want to get rekt, either. Aside from book club posts, I'm generally in the red, and who knows how long the generous stackers will keep liking the book discussions.

It's a fun topic to think about. @Undisciplined did some informal calculations on zapping, maybe he'll share.

I probably would have missed this post if I hadn't been summoned.

I've been encouraging Stacker News regulars to increase those default zaps pretty substantially, because the rewards algorithm pays them back at better than 1:1.

The way I've approached finding the right amount is to set my default at a fraction of what's in my wallet. That way I can stay in the black and have my zaps keep growing until they aren't paying for themselves anymore.

My default zaps were still paying for themselves at 175. I've generally been getting about 5k in rewards for zapping.

reply

Still going strong with a 210 default

reply

Was it paying for itself when they were rewarding zaps?

reply

More or less.
I'm a bit reckless on sn, not following the numbers too closely (I come here for fun), but I haven't funded my sn wallet in ages, so so far so good I think.

reply

I established my algorithmic approach because I also like being a bit reckless on SN. This way there's an automatic mechanism that will keep me out of trouble without needing to think about what I'm doing.

i still use 21 as my default, but i have definitely noticed that the more i zap the bigger the rewards. i also don't post or comment a ton, so the vast majority of what i've stacked here is just from rewards.

that being said, i think they're still playing with how rewards work, so we'll see if that holds true down the road.

reply

Zapping still pays for itself well above 21. The formula is non-linear and there are big benefits of being a high ranking zapper.

I'm sure they'll play around with the rewards structure again, but for now I think they're happy with this randomly alternating schedule between rewarding zaps and posts.

Default is Multiples of 100 on Alby. I'm going crazy on Fountain. I'm talking religiously! 😂

I zap powers of 2 or prime numbers

This sent me down a rabbit hole on prime numbers. Very interesting!

I like clicking multiple times and i dont like zapping just 1 sat each time.

reply

Everytime I add to my cold storage stack, I push 1% of the amount into stacker news that way there is no guilt of parting with my precious sats.
