In 2010, a Hawaii resident named James Furlong first learned about Bitcoin and, intrigued by the concept, began mining the cryptocurrency on his laptop. At that time, Bitcoin was relatively easy to mine on common hardware, and he managed to accumulate around 1000 Bitcoins.

For many years, Furlong didn't pay much attention to his digital coins. He had stored his private key in a text file on his computer. However, after some operating system updates and file cleaning, the text file containing his private key was accidentally deleted.

Furlong was devastated to realize he had lost access to his 1000 Bitcoins, especially as the value of Bitcoin increased over the years. He tried all possible measures to recover the file, including the assistance of data recovery experts, but to no avail.
