I'm running this experiment I call smallnode, my idea is to run a node with small channels (I only have one relatively big channel with Kraken), I want to see how able I'm to forward small payments, overall AMP Nostr zaps and AMP invoices.
Here you have the links to some liquidity swaps I have opened in case anyone wants to join the experiment:
50k sats: Pentagon swap 75k sats: Pentagon swap 75k sats: Square swap 100k sats: Square swap
Youĺl find the next text in all of the swaps descriptions:
Please be advised, THIS IS AN EXPERIMENT! I'm trying to make a node with the smallest possible "viable" channel capacity, I want to see if it's possible to route ONLY SMALL AMOUNTS AND/OR AMP INVOICES.
Be advised again, the channels might not be used at all, and I might close this node if I just run tired of it, hence the small channels, so nobody ends up losing a lot of money.
So yeah, if you wanna join the experiment, come on in, I think it could be a fun one.
More swaps can be opened, but that will be up to how much liquidity I want to put on LN.

Cool idea. Would love to see you come back and share your result occasionally -- would be good for SN to learn from you, and probably good for you to write them up. Writing is thinking, after all.

Thanks, I guess I'll be reporting in a few months.

Hope you well, it will be nice to see a report about this in the next couple of months. Are you using some re-balance technique? handle price and htlc max/min?
The idea is to make profits? or are you going to set price to 0?
I think you can explain a little more about the condition of the experiment, to set the scope more clearly. But hey! good luck!

I'm gonna set my fees to 0 base / 0.01 rate, but surely lndg will take them down.
I don't really think I'll be in profit this time next year by running this.

It was just recommendation to do a better experiment :) don't worry, for example now we know that you are using LNDg to manage the node. In my experience LNDg with a heavy strategy of re-balance doesn't work well with Tor network use.
I think this small channels could be useful when more people use MPP/AMP or the purchase power of bitcoin rise, so keep an eye on those external force.

That's my idea actually, as of now small channels are not viable, but they might be in the future, counting on that Bitcoin's value rises ad that people start using AMP/MMP to make payments.
About heavy rebalance strategy, you're right, it doesn't work that well, but the more channels I have, the better it works. Also the payments are doing the lords work here and help me rebalance the channels themselves since the channels are small anyways.

Let's help with your experiment with a small channel.

I like bitcoiners that are reckless. testnet is for pussies or only for devs.
Good luck with your experiment!
I am not sure if it will succeed with those small channels, especially if are public channels. Try with private channels instead and route hints
reply
I'll give it a try.
So far I've routed 38 payments in 2 weeks, lets dee what happens.
reply
Yep, these seem to small to me.
Also note, "private" channels should really be called unannounced channels. They aren't really private.
