  • Focus on topics about Bitcoin (and Lightning) from a social, technical and maybe just a little mathematical perspective
  • Provide a community of folks to talk about it with
  • Uses Bitcoin(/Lightning) as a first class feature to incentivize "positive" participation, reduce spam and "eat our own dogfood"
  • Minimal, intuitive interface that looks to be more focused on communicating quality content than on trying to leech money or attention from me
I haven't really found another site that hits the "HN but for Bitcoin" mark except for SN. It would be interesting to see a list of other competitors to SN (if any?) to see how they compare.
I'm also heavily biased towards the "clean" feel of news items presented like HN (and now SN). It feels uncluttered and lets me focus on the thing that's important. Reddit style sites have a large amount of cruft in terms of header banners, side menus and dropdowns. I just checked and on my browser at some nominal size, there are 3 "news" items on my Reddit home page that Reddit displays to me. On SN it's 18.
I do think the "killer feature" is the integration of Bitcoin/Lightning but without the interface, content and community, it would be the gas without an engine.

easy onboarding and free sats

was it that simple for you to join or anything else?
reply
Onboarding for SN is top notch IMO. No username or password is the way to go.

i hate going to the email login and registration stuff on new sites - its so yesterday thank sn for linurl login.

Apart from things already said in other comments... SN doesn't have ads.

I wouldn't mind self-hosted, Bitcoin-only sponsors though.

I like the built in spam filter by associating a cost with posting/commenting. Although a small price - it will filter out a lot naturally. Only possible on LN.
I hope will remain focused only on Bitcoin and stuff that matter and not get spammed by all shitcoins and TA BS and gov propaganda (regulations, taxes etc), like r/Bitcoin became.

Can you define what a similar site would be?
I don't know, but I can clearly say that it is already now my favourite LN-news site.
