This is a nuanced and deep convo. But short story, some Librarian took it on themselves to remove all books pre-2008 under the provincial mandate of "diversity/inclusivity".
Know which books were removed as a part of this? Diary of Anne Frank. The Hungry Catepillar. The Hunger Games. 🤯
On one hand, it's a decent push to curate diverse stories in a library. Different perspectives. And to get rid of old, outdated and racist/sexist/marginalizing ones. We can all agree it's worthwhile. (But do they keep the old references as an artifact of the past to remind us of how things once were.
But who becomes the arbiter of truth? Who watches the Watchmen? What happens when ONE powerful group silences dissenting perspectives?
Powerful stuff.
We need #Nostr. We need freedom. We need OPEN protocols. Not closed channels.
Stephen King said it best to, "Go find the books they're banning and read them." And then ask/ discern to yourself why.
