When we did LAN parties (well, at the beginning we actually used self made RS232 "null modem" serial port cables, as we were too poor to have proper Ethernet), we often just took out parts from our PCs and connected them together on the table without case, as case was unnecessary weight to carry around.

But they were really cheap - just buy two connectors and use soldering to self make them.
