zebedee even has KYC which is concerning. I guess this is because of a technical limitation right?
I believe we will. It's just hard to provide a low latency, secure, available, and reliable non-custodial UX for apps like our.
I've been meaning to explore @lylepratt's non-custodial UX on https://vida.live more and see what trade-offs he made.

I think some type of auto-balancing hybrid solution could work.
For example: If you go above 5000 sats, the overage gets sent to your LNURLp address. If your balance falls below 1000 sats, it gets refilled from a LNURLw you provided (examples only).
Point being: You could optimize for the simplicity/speed of custodial but still offer users control so they can maintain their risk profile.

I agree. I like to call this a buffer.
Users can manually do this now though, and many do, but it'd be nice to make it automatic - at least the withdrawal part.

Maybe there's some balance to Strike and there could be a model where each user owns the keys, but then the node is managed, like what https://blockstream.com/lightning/greenlight/ is doing.

The best way I can see this working now is to keep the wallet and the service separate, but have everything operate on a common standard like WebLN. That way I could use a plug-in like Alby connected to my self-custodied wallet and carry that around to any LN service to maintain a balance.
What I'd love to see is a way to segregate a wallet like Alby so that balances are maintained separately for each LN service -- so one for Stacker News, another for Zebedee, etc. This is similar to the allowance/budget feature Alby has today but extending that to give the LN service visibility and limited control of the funds in the balance. That way my balance displayed on SN, for example, would be the actual balance in my personal wallet for the site.
None of the above addresses the foundational challenge of setting up a non-custodial wallet in the first place, however, but I think it still could fill a gap.

I think it can, if we look at something like Alby where you can use their custodial wallet or connect your LN wallet or node, then I don't see why not
