I say “it’s like Reddit but your karma is bitcoin”
Their wheels then usually start turning attempting to imagine it.
Then I will say “it costs a little Bitcoin to post and comment but if your content is good you’ll usually earn more than you spent back. All the revenue the site earns is paid to the best content creators.”
Wheels now spinning furiously, stuck in mud.
“We’re also really fond of using a pretty straightforward trust metric for things like ranking because it seems more natural, non-authoritarian, and less psychologically manipulative.”
Their engine overheats and they’re stranded.
“It’s all just kind of an experiment to see if we can make better online communities. It’s easier to understand by actually trying to use it but it’s not for everyone, so maybe don’t.”
Currently, the site pretty strictly appeals to the non-cynical and I like it that way.
Most the people who refuse to spend time here are really wound up in presumptions and hypotheticals in an attempt to excuse themselves from appreciating something new. I get it. I’ll usually tell those people to not use SN. They’ll just be late adopters and that’s okay. It’s probably better for everyone that way.
