If you read the article the problem is really fiat. They can get paid perfectly fine with Bitcoin. Their issue appears when they want to exchange it to fiat.
If you just want to live a simple life, gift cards are fine, but if you want to be like the average person, it will be a bit hard. Being financially disempowered represents a degree of disconnection from society.

But I fear, that can't/won't catch on quick enough, because the gov't can make it too onerous (eg need to KYC your customers, if they pay in BTC)...even if your business isn't kyc.
