I was watching the Blue Jays get their asses kicked by the Orioles again last night. Orioles are highly impressive. Young, athletic, seem to have a team wide approach. I think the rule changes have really favoured young and athletic, adaptable teams. There seems to be a youth movement going on in baseball. So today let's play would your rather.

Ignoring long term potential of a team and focusing on a single season. Assuming both teams are equally competitive and in a playoff hunt, would you rather have a young, athletic, high upside team or an older, experienced, low downside team. Doesn't have to just be baseball focused. Maybe you feel differently for different sports.

Young teams are always more exciting to watch I think but come playoff time I think I will take the vets that have been there before.

Young and promising. There is always room to overachieve and surprise, but young talented teams offer tons of hope. As a Green Bay Packer fan, a team that aged (Rodgers) but always had high expectations, every year since 2011 felt like a disappointment. Won a championship early with a young and talented team and we always thought there would be another, and another, and it never was. 13-3 is great and fun to watch, but never getting to the Super Bowl, meant it was for nothing. I literally got used to the heartbreak in January. Now, a young and talented team, my expectations are low but I haven't been this excited for an NFL season in a long time. We may suck, but we may also surprise, and oddly, I think its the not knowing that excites me.

Young teams with talent just are always more exciting and truthfully probably have lower downsides as a fan, than the older experienced team. Older and experienced teams can hit a cliff at any time whereas young talent can hit the ramp and take off. Talking Baseball here now, see Yankees, Cardinals, etc. Whereas no one expected anything from the Cubs or Diamondbacks and yet they are in the playoff hunt!

I think your examples are good. Packers, Yankees and Cards all good examples of veteran teams that hung around every year but never really were contenders. That being said, how often do you see a young, dynamic team go on to win it all?
