Not exactly true (re: impossible to be faster) in practice. If we didn’t need to route, perhaps. If we have a direct channel already open that has the right balance, certainly, but this isn’t common in practice.

One example Pierre referred to was a trader with a direct connection to Kraken's Lightning node, or any instance where a payment is directly moving from one peer to another.
Is it fair to say that the # of nodes on a blockchain would have to be smaller than the # of hops on a routed Lightning tx to be faster? Assuming all nodes were located in the same data center in both cases?

Oh he meant impossible for a blockchain to be faster? That’s definitely true
reply
Yeah, this clip was about other blockchains.
Is there any non-blockchain payment method that could rival the speed of a direct (non-routed) Lightning payment?
reply
Hypothetically, if you create a protocol that doesn’t require you to create channels with counter parties, that’d be faster. But it doesn’t exist and might not be possible.
reply
Yep that would violate the laws of physics on faster than light travel

This four minute clip is a segment from Episode E33. For the full episode, there is another post here on SN with that:
