Honestly, most of the time it's not worth going down the route of arguing about complexity. This is not what it's mainly about.
From the perspective of Satoshi, it's very straightforward:
The reason why he chose PoW was that he COULD NOT choose PoS, since it inherently discriminates between network participants based on wealth. PoW is the only alternative satoshi could come up with that solves this. Simple as that.

Complexity is just a pillar of the argument. IMO it's worth including because many people think CO2 emissions are more important than discrimination and having a ruling class. Having multiple valid arguments in favor of something strengthens it.
