I get it, I used to like Solarpunk - the greenery, preventing climate change, and being pro-tech. But now I believe Solarpunk has its flaws. For the key tenet of Solarpunk is that humans will live in harmony with the earth, and through this vagueness and lack of vision, it was corrupted.
The vagueness is intentional tho. Making utopian art and spreading ideas isn't supposed to solve anything. It's just supposed to spread motivation and optimism to solve humanities greatest challenges in a tech-forward way instead of doomerism or contrarianism.
For to live in harmony with the earth is to imply a reduction of growth and resource usage. Even if successful, there is always the sense that climate change is right around the corner, and if one were to use fossil fuels, the whole ecosystem would collapse.
As well, solarpunk is, to use their terms, greenwashed socialism.
To some extent it's true that the solarpunk movement was captured by degrowthers and other political extremists. But that isn't a reason to abandon the movement. You can also be a tech-forward voice within the movements and stand up against them instead of fleeing.
But I agree with the sentiment. Just a quick look at the hot page on reddit shows that leftist extremists have captured the movement. It's really sad
