I'm glad you said "best" rather than "greatest". I think Jordan's the best by a pretty comfortable margin.
I am curious how people approach this kind of question, though. Most probably go with something like comparing the actual contributions made by the player and how much they dominated their competition.
I think there are some fun alternative ways to answer the question, though, that are a bit more abstract:
- Randomly add the player to real NBA rosters throughout history. Who improves teams the most?
- Make teams composed entirely of clones of each player. Which team wins some sort of clone tournament?
I don't think Jordan's the answer to either of these scenarios. Bird's my answer to the first and Lebron's my answer to the second.
