Not really. The only thing we know for certain is how much work is being done to form blocks. You can work backwards from the hashrate and probably be within an order of magnitude.

There was a good report from coin metrics attempting to guess which miners are being used: #192761. You might be able to use this method to create a live estimate of number of mining machines.
