The first one was r/nsfw apparently. Followed by r/programming and r/politics. Originally subs were motivated by subjects dominating the front page. [1]

Or just ~tech in general? I think most people aren't interested in programming but may be in tech related stuff (which includes programming)

I agree, a ~programming sub seems like the most obvious target right now.
