Unfortunately, I think it is. It seems the Bitmain machines have much better hashrate per dollar spent and more efficient power usage.

USB miners are a good insurance policy against governments physically attacking large mining operations and thus weakening the network overall, but that doesn't make it profitable and I worry about the scalability of altruism.
