Authorities seized Bitcoin mining equipment worth approximately 5 million Baht in two houses in Samut Prakan after discovering stolen electricity used for mining. The electricity theft amounted to around 500,000 Baht per month in both houses combined. On May 12, 2023, police and Metropolitan Electricity Authority officials conducted searches in the Mueang district due to unusually high power consumption. It is unknown if any arrests were made, but two electricians filed reports. During the raid at the first house, 60 miners worth 3 million Baht were found, revealing an unpaid excess consumption of 300,000 Baht per month. The second operation took place in the same area, where 20 miners worth 2 million Baht were confiscated. The police stated that the tenants of this house had stolen electricity worth around 200,000 Baht per month. Bitcoin mining is an energy-intensive process that requires significant computational power, with mining a single Bitcoin known to consume about 150,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity.
