In an attempt to protect its forests and famous wildlife, Virunga has become the first national park to run a Bitcoin mine.
•Virunga is Africa’s oldest protected park.
•The Congolese government provides around just 1% of the park’s operating budget.
•After four years of disease outbreaks, pandemic lockdowns, and bloodshed, Virunga needs money, and the region needs opportunities
•The park started mining in September of 2020 as most of the world was locked down.
•Proceeds from the sale of Bitcoin are already helping to pay for park salaries, as well as its infrastructure projects like roads and water pumping stations.
