You can use Aegis as an alternative to Google Authenticator.
It's open source and it works great. It has encryption and different backup options.
Good thing I already migrated to Aegis and manage my own backups in my journey to de-Google my life.
Do not use Google Auth, it is extremely unsafe. There are many open source alternatives. An example can be found on the github link: https://github.com/pluja/awesome-privacy#2fa
Backup must be secured.
