You can use Aegis as an alternative to Google Authenticator.
It's open source and it works great. It has encryption and different backup options.
Backup must be secured.
By design. No business the size of Google would genuinely think that was a good idea to ship without.
Almost everithing was better if descentralisation was a part of Google...
Good thing I already migrated to Aegis and manage my own backups in my journey to de-Google my life.
Do not use Google Auth, it is extremely unsafe. There are many open source alternatives. An example can be found on the github link: https://github.com/pluja/awesome-privacy#2fa
