Interesting conversation about the structure of the Muun wallet

Funny coming from nuno considering for many years he ran a custodial lightning integration bundled into their "non-custodial" wallet.
This is disingenuous, even for me who is an anti-muun proponent. If you as a user have 2 of the 2 keys needed to spend the funds, and nobody else has them both, then you have custody of the funds.
This is false. You can spend funds entirely independent on muun.
Now their lightning side of it is a different story, but "I don't think muun has any part that can be considered non custodial" is a flat out competitor-driven lie.

But if the second key is on Muun servers, and Muun servers disappear, do you have full custody of your bitcoin?
The ux of Muun is absolutely brilliant, but I find the opaqueness of how the backend runs disconcerting. As a result, I'm using Muun as if it's a custodian wallet.

It's not solely on muun servers. It's in the PDF that you're supposed to download and back up.

Thanks for that. I just visited their recovery tool and it clearly states no collaboaration from Muun is required.
So why are you an anti-muun proponent?

Also is always not mentioned: who controls the xpub also could see all the txs.
In Muun case, the xpubs are controlled by Muun servers / masters not by the user.
The user can't even extract them from that wallet.
I am amazed how many "privacy advocates" call Muun the "best" wallet.
Not talking also that Muun CANNOT BE INSTALLED WITHOUT GOOGLE SERVICES!
That means total tracking of the user.

As fiatjaf points out - Muun is even more than non-custodial :)

ignore the haters. learn how it works.
chose your wallet by your knowledge and convenience.
Avoid REAL custodial wallets that are recommended around here.

Muun is non-custodial.
They run a debit/credit model where your bitcoin on-chain is your debit and they kinda credit you with lightning. They make money on having higher fees on the credit side.

This is FUD. The wallet is a 2-of-2. One key is in the app, Muun holds a copy of the key. BOTH keys and wallet descriptors are in an encrypted recovery PDF that they have you download and back up. You have the ability to unilaterally move your money, they do not. That's non-custodial.

Considering all this, Muun is still very convenient to use as a transfer from on-chain-lightning-on-chain

"The only thing you can do with the backup is to use it on muun"
This is not true! Regarding the lightning part, Muun technically is not a lightning wallet.
