Open networks engaged in message relaying are difficult to keep from getting into a state where a lot of activity focuses on a small number of nodes causing congestion. There needs to be feedback in the network to help improve path selection, so nodes know who's in the middle of a flood and avoid them. Random selection, as with AMP helps reduce the problem. With pure random selection the network would never get congested except occassionally and usually briefly.
Enabling AMP would help in other ways too. In my work with Indra, multi-path transmission is something I want to enable (and programmability of paths, via scripting or some kind of parameters) to provide reliable and low latency connections.
LN is working pretty good already but there's so many ways it can be improved, I'm looking forward to seeing more of the proof of the value of multi-path message transit in general.
