Banksy confounded authorities worldwide for decades and in spite of this (or even helped by this) became famous and popular worldwide.
It'd be interesting to hear about other pseudonymous figures that might prove equally inspirational.

yes, satoshi’s anonymity is special too, but banksy has continued to create art in public places while the entire world has their eyes peeled for his presence.

I agree with you @kr, Banksy's longer, and completely audacious activity, really does take the biscuit.
Because of the various differing art styles throughout Banksy's time. It has been argued among artists that I know that Banksy might be an 'art collective' rather than just one individual.
Being a collective would really make sense, as it brings about all the benefits of decentralization.

umm.. don't want to be to preachy but, authors of the Bible/Bibles are basically pseudonymous
