Here are some more arguments about yes vs no:
Why it could be a religion:
- was bitcoin created by people (yes)
- does bitcoin require faith (yes)
- would people go to war over bitcoin? (probably)
- do bitcoiners hate other shitcoiners and vice versa (yes)
- if a new baby is born into a bitcoin family, will they be a bitcoiner (with high probability)
- do bitcoiners have crazy conferences (yes)
- do bitconers have a mantra (yes - not your keys, not your coins)
- do bitcoiners have a place where they gather - (yes, usually the only place that accepts btc in town)
- are there many different groups with bitcoiners (yes, example - some hate ordinals, some don't)
Why it is not a religion:
- is bitcoin dying off? (hell no)
- does bitcoin have a magical imaginary friend? (hardly, Satoshi was or were real)
- does bitcoin tell you what to do? (no)
- does bitcoin discriminate against race and other human traits? (no)
- when bitcoiners talk about bitcoin, do others look at them like they are crazy (yes)
So, eventhough Bitcoin appears as a religion, it has many traits of not being a religion.
Add more to the list if you dare.
Do you know what a social construct is?
I feel like people compare it to being a religion, but they don't understand social constructs and religion is the closest thing they can think of. They accept social constructs as mere facts of life that requires no faith at all (but they do, people just don't think about it.)
During the congressional hearing yesterday, Jerome Powell said: "If people believe inflation will go to 5% then it will" J Pow talking about "the faith in the currency" which an important aspect of money that economists generally understand. It is this faith in the currency that allowed the "Real" in Brazil to be successful (until the government killed it off just like their last currency). It is the concept that this video is talking about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPspYa8TLlA

All rectangles are squares but not all squares are rectangles.
Religion is a social construct, but not all social constructs are religions.
