The Moon and Nostalgia. Digital painting.

"Contemporary", I think, is about creating things that function in the present, things that make life joyful.

The "contemporary" is not a specific form or style. It is not about representing the world as it is in its decline and ugliness, especially by exaggerating that decay. Everyone already tastes that aspect of the world; they know it from experience.

To create things that are truly contemporary, meaning functional, you need, I believe, to reveal a world beyond the ugliness produced by divisive egoism, resentment, and the deadly competition of mortals for pieces of power.

I have the sense that to make contemporary work, you must portray the world in a visionary way: as hope, as reconciliation, as unity and love, as a beautiful vision of society.

Above all, it is good to find ways to bring to the community a visible testimony of joy, something that, more than anything else, is missing from our troubled world.
