For the past decade, Austin has been a standard-bearer for the YIMBY (Yes in My Backyard) movement, passing a barrage of policy changes to make it easier to build new housing, especially new apartment buildings. FWIW I believe there's a possible correlation between immigration deportations and rents going down. I have seen Scott Bessent talk about how illegal immigration was a driver of inflation in housing rent. I have no idea whether that plays any role in Austin though.
