As far as I know, there isn't anything that would prevent transferring bitcoin over any distance. Is that right? So, it does seem like this would slow down the verification process.

Maybe, that would mean that local commerce would have to be almost entirely off-chain, in the long run. It seems like that's where things are heading anyway, though.
