If you've been looking for an easy explanation of Proof of Work to give your friends, this might be the one. It gets the details right and doesn't say stupid stuff.

It covers things like:

  • what is a hash
  • how mining solves the double-spend problem
  • why mining is more like a lottery than a math problem

The mining simulator is particularly helpful. Took me ~250 attempts to mine a block with 3 leading zeros.

The about page for bennet.org describes itself as something between Wait but Why and Learn Me a Bitcoin. I'm surprised I have not heard of this website before, because it seems pretty good. Looks like it launched in June 2025. Tom seems to still be putting up new content: there's a Raspberry Pi Node guide that was published this month, and last month a very nice explainer BIP39 mnemonics.
