Most developers use gzip all the time.

We download compressed assets.
We serve compressed HTTP responses.
We store compressed logs, archives, packages, and backups.

And yet, for many of us, gzip lives in the same mental category as DNS, TLS, or B-trees:

important, everywhere, and slightly mysterious.

We trust it.
We depend on it.
But we do not really see it.
