Diesel prices in the state hit a record $7.07 per gallon, surpassing the previous peak of $7.01 set in June 2022.
At the same time, gasoline prices are approaching $6 per gallon, compared to a national average of ~$4.
This comes as California imports ~20% of its refined fuels from Asia, a supply line now at risk as the Strait of Hormuz closure leaves Asian nations struggling to meet their own domestic demand.
Fuel shortages in California are now a real possibility.
Meanwhile, Chevron is now taking the unusual step of shipping Gulf Coast oil to California through the Panama Canal to bypass the disrupted Asian supply routes.
